Professor Youngman worked at the University of Botswana from 1975 to 2015. He was Dean of Education from 1987 to 1991 and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Vice President) for Academic Affairs from 2005 to 2011. In the latter position he had responsibility for overseeing the international affairs of the University and established the Office of International Education and Partnerships. He was Professor of Adult Education and published extensively in the fields of lifelong learning, education policy and higher education. More recently, he has researched and published on Africa-China relations. He is currently Senior Resident Researcher in the Centre for African Studies at Shanghai Normal University.

In this talk, Professor Youngman will consider the concept and motivations for internationalization in higher education as experienced at one African university, the University of Botswana (UB), and give an analytical description of its implementation. On the basis of UB’s experience, he will draw a number of conclusions about strategies, structures and systems for university internationalization that may have general relevance.
